We love the colder months at The Con-nection because it means all our favourite winter clothes have landed, hello buttery leather and heavy duty coats. What we don’t love is the havoc it plays on our skin, from the strong winds outside to the heater we blast at home; it can leave our skin looking dull and dehydrated. With a long winter ahead of us, it’s time to start thinking about our skin. There are simple products and treatments that we can indulge in to get our skin in tip-top condition, just in time for the warmer months ahead.
1. WASH YOUR FACE WITH LUKEWARM WATER
1. WASH YOUR FACE WITH LUKEWARM WATER There is nothing better than a steaming hot shower in winter, but when you can, particularly when you are just washing your face or hands, chose lukewarm water to avoid stripping away all the natural oils from your skin.
2. CHANGE YOUR MOISTURISER
Some moisturisers on the market can actually be more drying and damaging to your skin because they contain petroleum-based ingredients. I like to look at oil-based products in winter, as it is more likely to help your skin retain moisture in winter. Some good oils to try are sweet almond, avocado, extra-virgin olive or coconut oil, grapeseed, cold-pressed sesame, apricot kernel, and rosehip oil.
We often forget how important it is to brush off those dead cells in winter. Yep, moisture can’t get in if the dead cells are sitting on top of your skin. You don’t need to scrub like crazy to get them off your skin. I love this product BHA liquid product by Paula's Choice as you easily wipe it over your skin and it unclogs pores instantly and keeps your skin smooth.
4.FOCUS ON YOUR LIPS
My lips have been in horrid condition for the last few months. They look dry and feel cracked and tight. I have been testing out different lip balms, (I am sure you all have the famous Red Paw Paw ointment in your handbag). I was using it all the time and then I realised it was making my lips drier and flakier, forcing me to reapply every few hours. Many lip balms promise the world but end up making your lips worse.
My favourite lip balm is ‘Lips by Go-To Skincare’, it includes medical grade lanolin, avocado, almond, evening primrose and jojoba oils- yep it sounds good enough to eat. Trust me, this product won't leave you dependent on using it all the time. Instead, it will fix your damaged lips and doesn’t leave them sticky. I also love Coconut Kiss by Milk & Co, it is super hydrating but never sticky.
5. ACTIVE SKINCARE
How often do we read about all these whiz-bang beauty products that you can buy over the counter, and they promise to fix our problem skin? I’m a sucker for them too, (and don’t get me wrong, some are amazing) but most of them don’t have powerful ‘active’ ingredients to work hard and fix our skin.
The term ‘active skincare’ refers to ingredients that have been scientifically proven to have medical effects on the skin, so they have been proven to actually change your skin. It’s ingredients like Vitamin A and C, AHA’s and retinol. There are several beauty brands that master active skincare. I love Paula’s Choice, Aspect Dr, Skin Medica and Societe. You can find these brands in-store at registered medical practices and online. Head to each of these brands websites to find a stockist near you.
6. INVESTING IN DERMAL THERAPIES
It is so important to give you skin that extra dose of love and care during winter. So that means you may need to invest in professional facials. I love getting facials that work to repair and hydrate my skin. I get this result with the use of microdermabrasion (also known as derma sweep at some beauty practices) and peels and lasers.
Peels can help renew the skin cells, fixing dry skin or enlarged pores and promote brighter skin.
7. WHAT YOU EAT + DRINK
I am sure you have heard it many times before, but what you eat and drink has a huge effect on your skin. There is nothing more important than drinking water, and plenty of it. Nothing will help the appearance of your skin more, and the trick is to sip on it constantly during the day. It is not as beneficial on our insides to down all your litres in one go as your body won't have time to take in the hydration. Instead, you will flush it out quickly. Green or herbal teas are also a great way to add some more antioxidants.
After all this pampering, your skin will be in perfect condition and you won't have to worry about that dry and flaky skin and you will be ready to get out there looking your best.
