5 TRENDS FROM AUSTRALIAN FASHION WEEK

And, that’s a wrap. 45 shows later and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia has officially drawn to an end. What a week it has been, from celebrating ten years with Romance was Born to the anticipated showing from Oscar De La Renta and of course, who could forget the street style – otherwise known as the real reason why fashion week attendance has become almost mandatory. There was a lot to be excited about this year in terms of street style. We saw the reinvention of rocking an “Entire-Gucci” ensemble to Bomber Jackets and Colour Blocking with the inclusion of our all-time favourite wardrobe staples; denim, leather, block heels and statement bags. Here I recall the top 5 street style trends worth adopting this season;

1.ONE-PIECE WONDER

In some cases, one statement piece is all you need especially when dressing amidst the Fashion Week buzz. Make like Australian fashion blogger, Carman Hamilton of Chronicles of Her, and keep things fuss-free this season with a one-piece ensemble. Artsy individuality gives a masculine edge to dresses and one-piece combinations – with shoulder pads, sleeves and mesh cut-outs. Opt for rounded sunglasses and minimalistic heels to ensure your ensemble receives the attention it so greatly deserves.

2.CLASSIC STAPLES

A traditional button-up paired with denim and block heels is destined to score street-style-status wherever you may be. Take your style cues from Vogue Editor Petta Chua, and play it traditional this season with off- duty denim, silk shirts and statement accessories. For a fashion-week-approved approach add contrasting colour ways and a slick up-do to get you from A – B, both on and off the runway.

3.SENTIMENTAL ATTACHMENTS

Accessories have come in waves this season; from statement sunglasses to patterned clutches to textured footwear, each one can bring a sense of edginess or femininity or anything in between. Whether you favour statement sunglasses or a simple printed mule, accessories could be the inevitable outfit additions you’re missing. Take your accessorising inspiration from designer Poppy Lissiman and give your ensemble a dash of character this season.

4.IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BOMBER

Whether it is the Autumn chill or the fact that jackets are so hot right now, there was no doubting that the humble throw-over made an appearance on the streets at Fashion Week. From printed bombers to blazers to the traditional denim jacket, there was not an outfit in-site that didn’t have a jacket of some sort in tow. Whether it is strewn over bare shoulders or tied around a skater skirt, adding a jacket can incorporate a sporty yet androgynous appeal to any ensemble.

5.PRINTS GALORE

Statement textures are everything, whether prints, lace, or a profusion of mesh fabrications. It is time to ditch the minimalist attire and adorn yourself in prints this season; from pattern-on-pattern dresses to delicately curated top and skirt combinations, the print movement is well underway. Turn heads this season with the help of blogger Tanja Gacic, and mix printed textures paired with statement sunglasses for an elegant effect.
